It is not uncommon to find yourself in your 50’s and wondering what you are going to do with the rest of your life. Let’s face it, we are all living longer so you could easily jump ship from that dead-end job or take the mandatory lay-off at 55 and move on. The problem is that in a world that is moving so fast with technology, will you be able to catch up?
As it turns out, mature workers – those aged 45 and over – are in high demand in today’s marketplace. Even if you can’t believe you do, you possess several skills that employers are now looking for in order to keep their businesses on track and connected to the world it is operating within. But how is that possible if you don’t even own a cellphone?
Mature workers have “been there, done that” to the point where they are the most valuable people on the planet. That means you have tons to offer a new employer. Here’s a short list of the qualities they are looking for from mature workers:
1 – Leadership
Oddly enough, if your midlife career change puts you at the bottom of the ladder in a new job, expect to move up quickly. That’s because you have leadership skills from your years of experience. This puts you in the perfect position to mentor younger staff on such things as work ethic, respect and punctuality. Your value to your new employer just went up!
2 – Health
Sure, you’re in your 50’s and you aren’t about to take on the young bucks in a game of hoops after work but your health is still better. When the number of sick days was compared for employees 45 and older to all of them younger than 45, the mature workers took less days because they got sick fewer times. Again, your stock has taken a spike!
3 – Loyalty
Mature workers are the most loyal of all employees. That’s because they are not climbing the ladder early in their career to get somewhere. They’ve done that. Some have owned their own businesses and are looking to just do something to stay busy. Regardless of why you are still working into your 50’s, it won’t be because you’re trying to impress someone.
4 – Entrepreneurship
Here’s the most interesting thing about mature workers. Those who start their own business in their 50’s are more successful that someone in their 20’s or 30’s doing the same thing. Any idea why that is? They’ve made all their mistakes already and will do whatever it takes to avoid making them again. Does that sound familiar to you at all?
The Rest of The Story
So, if you think you will be working well into your 50’s because you have to instead of because you want to, you will be wrong. You have more value than you think and now is the time to leverage that into a nice little job or business to exercise all those talents you’ve been keeping hidden away just for this opportunity. A new career signals a new start – regardless of your age!
